• • • PTC Charges NBC Allowed Emmycast Indecency • • •

Calista Flockhart Emmy Awards picture The Parents Television Council has filed an indecency complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, charging that T&A comments by Dame Helen Mirren and Calista Flockhart on Sunday night's NBC broadcast of "The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" should have been bleeped.
Mirren, walking onstage to accept an Emmy for her leading role in HBO's "Elizabeth I," joked that "My great triumph is not falling ass over tit coming up those stairs. If you saw the shoes I've got on, you would understand."
Calista Flockhart repeated the "ass over tits" statement.
PTC President L. Brent Bozell noted that NBC was the network that aired the 2003 Golden Globes telecast in which musician Bono referred to something as "f---ing brilliant," a statement that subsequently prompted the FCC to act.
"Didn't NBC learn anything from airing the live broadcast of the Golden Globes during which Bono dropped the F-word? NBC should have aired the Emmys on a tape-delay to bleep out the obscenities. A few seconds' delay would not have meant a thing," he said.
Dan Isett, PTC's director of corporate and government affairs, said the word "tits" was the problem.
"It's one of the original 'seven dirty words.' It should be considered a dirty word," he said, though adding that PTC's point was broader than the specifics. He said NBC hadn't exercised proper care in screening.
Asked whether "tits" really constitutes indecency anymore-a dancer in the musical "A Chorus Line" repeatedly sings of tits and ass in one example of mainstream usage-Islett said that decision isn't up to him: "It doesn't matter what I think. It's what the law says."
NBC did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

• • • Emmy Awards : Things were red-hot on the carpet • • •

Calista Flockhart Emmy Awards picture [...] And then some celebrities probably come late by design, to avoid all the crowds. Harrison Ford and girlfriend Calista Flockhart both strolled down the carpet casually after the crowd had dwindled, stopping only to chat with producer Brian Grazer, who decided to stop his interview with "Entertainment Tonight" to interview the newcomers instead.
"Now why are you guys here?" Grazer asked Ford and Calista Flockhart. "Praying for '24'? And when are we gonna go for those margaritas we talked about?"
Ford raised an eyebrow and grinned.
"You know, you have a talent for this," he said.
And then, like the rest of the rapidly dwindling star power of the carpet, he and Calista Flockhart went inside, where the show was under way.

• • • 'Everwood' Creator Joins ABC's 'Brothers & Sisters' • • •

Calista Flockhart Brothers and Sisters If the scripts for ABC’s new fall drama "Brothers & Sisters" are as good as the behind-the-scenes intrigue surrounding the show, the network might have a hit on its hands. Last week, you'll recall, executive producer Marti Noxon abruptly quit, a decision people familiar with the situation say was due to creative differences with series creator Jon Robin Baitz. The defection of Noxon, who as the "showrunner" was the producer responsible for day-to-day supervision of the series, casts a cloud over "Brothers," which debuts next month and stars Calista Flockhart as a New York talk-show host drawn back to her extended family in Southern California.
To fill the gap, Walt Disney Co.-owned Touchstone Television, which makes the show, has tapped veteran writer-producer Greg Berlanti to help out with scripts and production management, a spokeswoman confirmed Monday. Berlanti is an A-list TV industry player, best-known as the creator of two critically acclaimed but now-canceled WB network dramas, "Everwood" and "Jack and Bobby." He also has a development deal with Touchstone and has been working on an ABC drama pilot called "Eli Stone," about an attorney who may have supernatural powers. His new role raises the possibility that Berlanti might permanently take the reins on "Brothers." That would in turn heighten doubts about the level of control retained by Baitz and another executive producer, Ken Olin.
The situation bears some similarities to "Commander in Chief," the ABC drama starring Geena Davis that imploded last year after Rod Lurie, the series’ creator, suddenly exited the show early in its run. "Commander" then went through tumultuous personnel shifts before being canceled.
Noxon hasn't commented on her departure.
Neither Berlanti nor his agent immediately returned telephone calls, but Touchstone spokeswoman Charissa Gilmore dismissed any hint of turmoil on "Brothers.". "Everyone is absolutely thrilled about this collaboration, and we’re still trying to weigh options for going forward," she said of Berlanti. "No decisions have been made as of yet."

• • • Behind-the-scenes drama on Calista Flockhart series • • •

Calista Flockhart's new ABC family soap "Brothers & Sisters" is spawning its own real-life drama.
The show, which also stars Rachel Griffiths, was given a makeover last month when Sally Field replaced Betty Buckley, who had played the family matriarch in the pilot. Additionally, Matthew Rhys was hired to play one of the brothers, replacing Jonathan LaPaglia.
In the latest development, Marti Noxon officially exited as executive producer/showrunner Tuesday after weeks of rumblings about friction with the series' creator, Jon Robin Baitz.
"Brothers & Sisters" is expected to continue production as scheduled, with filming on the fourth episode slated to begin Wednesday. It will debut in the fall, in the coveted Sunday 10 p.m. slot behind "Desperate Housewives."

• • • Right up her Ally - Stay-at-home mom Calista Flockhart leaves the nest... • • •

Calista Flockhart Brothers and Sisters Has it really been five years since Ally McBeal? "It absolutely feels like a long time has passed," says Calista Flockhart, who has been pretty much a stay-at-home mom with five-year-old son Liam and fiance Harrison Ford since McBeal was cancelled in 2001.
This fall, she returns to television as a conservative radio host in Brothers & Sisters, an ensemble family drama co-starring Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under), Ron Rifkin, Patricia Wettig and Sally Fields. The ABC drama will air Sunday nights at 10 p.m. on Global this fall.
Flockhart says she loves being a mom, "but as any mother can tell you, you stay at home with a two-year-old 24/7, you get mush brain." Now Liam is five and off to school in the fall and "I really want to go back to work," says Flockhart. She knew Brothers & Sisters executive producer Jon Robin Biatz from their Broadway days, loved the script and the part and especially the lifestyle of working on a L.A.-based ensemble. "I wasn't going to be responsible for carrying the show and I would have a better schedule. And that's pretty much it."
Back on McBeal, Flockhart was trained to utter every last syllable of David E. Kelley's word-perfect scripts. So far on Brothers & Sisters, not so much. "I keep calling the script supervisor and saying, 'What is that word, is it its or it's?' I'm very specific about the words I say, and Robbie and (executive producer Ken Olin) are like, 'Who cares?' "

• • • "Brothers & Sisters" looks good on paper (spoilers) • • •

Calista Flockhart On paper, "Brothers & Sisters" looks to have everything going for it, boasting a cast that includes Sally Field, Calista Flockhart, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin and Patricia Wettig and a creative team including playwright Jon Robin Baitz, Marti Noxon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and Ken Olin ("Alias").
On the other hand, the series is the only new show that has not been screened for critics; a couple of roles have been recast (Field is a late addition) and the tone has been retooled: All the makings of a troubled production. "I never got the sense that we were troubled at all," Baitz told members of the Television Critics Association Wednesday afternoon in Pasadena. "It was recasting — I never got a sense of anyone's panic. In fact, the network let us try again." "We decided the temperature needed to be a little different," Noxon added. "We felt the family should have a little more fun."
Well, OK. But the producers seemed either unable or unwilling to give reporters whether or not Tom Skerritt, who portrays the family's patriarch, will appear in episodes beyond the pilot. In the brief cut-down shown to critics, his character is seen collapsing into a pool; Skerritt's name doesn't appear anywhere in the show's promotional materials.
It took three separate questions before Olin finally admitted that they didn't have a deal with Skerritt to appear in any more episodes. After that, a journalist whose laptop with access to the hotel's spotty wi-fi pointed out that ABC's "Sons & Daughters" website mentioned the death of the patriarch as part of its series description.
You want another reason to fear something less than the best? Baitz declared, "This family is, in some ways, America," and that the show is "the TV equivalent of new journalism."
For her part, Field said, "If we splat, I hope it's colorful. Big, bold and colorful."
